Pasticcio – Italian Pasta Dish

Pane-Bistecca
Pasticcio is a typical Sicilian Pasta dish, similar to the Lasagna. But it is not as nicely layered as the Lasagna, otherwise it would not be called Pasticcio. Pasticcio means mess. It can also mean cake, as often it is also encased with pastry.

One can ask where this dish originates, as it is also well known in Greece (pastitsio), Egypt (makarōna beshamelمكرونة بشاميل‎), Cyprus, Malta (timpana) and Turkey (fırında makarna. Of course, each country makes it with some regional differences. My Pasticcio is very simple and very Sicilian!

  • 1 Dose Pelati/Tomatoes

  • 450 g Tomato Sauce

  • 3 tbsp Tomato Paste

  • 1 Onion, chopped

  • 3 Garlic cloves, chopped

  • 1 Carrot, diced

  • Bechamel Sauce

  • 50 g Butter

  • 4 tbsp Flour

  • 500 ml Milk

  • Salt and Pepper

  • Paprika

  • Italian Herbs

  • Nutmeg

  • Chili flakes

  • 1 Handful Parmesan

  • and

  • some Olive Oil

  • 2 Mozzarella Balls (Optional)

  • 100 g Parmesan

Instructions

1

Step 1

Cook the pasta al Dente and drain.
2

Step 2

Meanwhile fry the onion and garlic in some olive oil. Add the meat and fry well. (If you are using the sausages just take the meat from the casings and chop it up) Season well and add the tomato paste and carrot. Then add the peeled tomatoes and the tomato sauce. Let the sauce cook for 40 minutes, then mix the pasta in.
3

Step 3

In a separate pot melt the butter, then add the flour and whisk well together until it all sticks together. Add the milk and season with pepper, nutmeg, and a handful of grated Parmesan. Whisk all the time until the sauce thickens.
4

Step 4

Put approx. half the pasta into a greased ovenproof dish (If you wish you can put some mozzarella slices on top) pour some of the Bechamel sauce over it, then add the rest of the pasta. Pour the rest of the Bechamel sauce over it all. Sprinkle with a generous amount of Parmesan cheese. Bake in the oven at 200 C for 40-45 minutes.
