Kapana – grilled Beef from Namibia

Pane-Bistecca
Namibia is a country where a lot of meat is eaten. Of course, because the soil is poor, and you cannot grow many vegetables. Kapana – grilled beef from Namibia is a street food, very typical from there. On every street corner you can smell it, there is a grill, and the beef strips (or other meats) are sizzling on it. Kapana is a Namibian spice mixture that goes very well with meat.

On our trip through Namibia there was no beef, but a lot of game, springbok, kudu and more. Since I cannot eat game, I had trouble to eat, because as mentioned, there was not much choice. There was always sweet potato, sometimes corn kernels and sometimes rice.

Ingredients

Here is the original recipe from Esterkocht.com

  • 600 g well marbled Beef Steak

  • 22 tbsp Kapana seasoning (above is the link to the seasoning)

  • I mixed what I had at home, garlic powder, ground coriander, paprika, chili flakes, thyme, salt, ground cumin, brown sugar, black pepper

  • 2 tbsp Oil

Instructions

1

Step 1

Cut the meat into long strips. Put them in a bowl and add the spices and oil, mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and let marinate for at least 1 hour.
2

Step 2

The meat is traditionally cooked on the grill, since I don’t have one, I fried the strips in a pan over high heat.
3

Step 3

Serve the meat with the Bean Dip,Papaya Chutney and the Pap!
