Zwaetschge Waehie – Prune Pie from Switzerland

2 Mins read

On our summer holidays visiting the family in Switzerland, I can hardly wait for their prune tartes. I cannot wait until the prunes are ripe and I can finally bake!!! I love the acidity of prunes and apricots! The prunes are ripe now!!!
Zwaetschge Waehie (Tsweh tsh geh Wheh eh), as it is called in Swiss German, is almost like a national dish. On Friday’s – a meat free day – the housewives used to bake savory cheese pies and fruit tartes. And during summer it’s mostly the prune tarte.

Wer’s ganz dekadent mag, serviert geschlagene Sahne dazu!

For a round Pie dish of 30 cm diameter or a rectangular dish of 25/35 cm:
1 ready rolled out Puff Pastry dough or Short Crust dough (whatever you like best)
1,2 kg Prunes
6 tbsp ground Almonds
3 tbsp brown Sugar
1 Pinch of Cinnamon
2 tbsp Almond flakes

Grease the tarte dish well and layer it with the pastry. Pull up the sides. Prick the bottom of the tarte with a fork and sprinkle the ground almonds onto it. Half the prunes, remove the stone and layer them nicely onto the pastry. You can also cut the prunes into quarters, that looks very nice too. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and the almond flakes. Bake in the oven at 200 C for 40 minutes.
You can serve the tarte hot or cold. If you like, serve the tarte with some whipped whipping cream!
