Sweet potatoes are also called yams in certain places, but this is incorrect because yams are a different vegetable, not a sweet potato. It is believed that the sweet potato was native to Central America, but was brought to Southeast Asia, the Philippines, by the Spanish very early on. Freed slaves in turn brought the sweet potato to Africa, which is why it is grown in almost all warmer countries.
