It&#8217;s really interesting to see how international such a simple meal like French Toast is.\u00a0Nowadays this poor people dish has become a dessert for many posh restaurants!\n<br><br>\nThe earliest known reference to French toast is in the\u00a0Apicius, a collection of\u00a0Latin\u00a0recipes\u00a0dating to the 4th or 5th century; the recipe mentions soaking in milk, but not egg, and gives it no special name, just\u00a0aliter dulcia &#8220;another sweet dish&#8221;.\u00a0<br>\nUnder the names\u00a0suppe dorate,\u00a0soupys yn dorye,\u00a0tost\u00e9es dor\u00e9es, and\u00a0payn purdyeu, the dish was widely known in medieval Europe. For example, Martino da Como offers a recipe. French toast was often served with game birds and meats. The word &#8220;soup&#8221; in these names refers to bread soaked in a liquid, a sop.\u201c<br>\nThe usual\u00a0French\u00a0name is\u00a0pain perdu\u00a0&#8220;lost bread&#8221;, as it is a way to reclaim stale or otherwise &#8220;lost&#8221; bread. It may also be called\u00a0pain dor\u00e9\u00a0&#8220;gilded bread&#8221;.\u00a0The term\u00a0pain perdu\u00a0was formerly used metaphorically to mean sunk costs.<br>\nA fourteenth-century\u00a0German\u00a0recipe uses the name\u00a0Arme Ritter\u00a0(&#8220;poor knights&#8221;),\u00a0a name also used in English\u00a0and the\u00a0Nordic languages. Also in the fourteenth century,\u00a0Taillevent\u00a0presented a recipe for &#8220;tost\u00e9es dor\u00e9es&#8221;.<br>\nThere are fifteenth-century English recipes for\u00a0pain perdu.<br>\nAn\u00a0Austrian and Bavarian\u00a0term is\u00a0pafese\u00a0or\u00a0pofese, from\u00a0zuppa pavese, referring to Pavia,Italy.<br>\nIn\u00a0France,\u00a0pain perdu may be eaten as a dessert, a breakfast, or an afternoon tea snack (&#8220;go\u00fbter&#8221;).<br>\nHong Kong\u2013style French toast\u00a0Hong Kong\u2013style French toast is made by deep-frying sliced bread dipped in beaten egg or soy, served with butter, and topped with\u00a0golden syrup\u00a0or sometimes honey. It is typically made as a sandwich, with a sweet filling.\u00a0It is a typical offering in Hong Kong teahouses (cha chaan teng).<br>\n Torrija\u00a0is a similar recipe traditionally prepared in\u00a0Spain\u00a0for\u00a0Lent\u00a0and\u00a0Holy Week. Torrijas or torrejas were first mentioned by the Spanish composer, poet and playwright\u00a0Juan del Encina\u00a0(1468-1533) in his Cancionero, published in 1496.
